Meet the Team

The counsellors across all three campuses are trained in a variety of counselling approaches including Person Centred, Integrative, CBT, Psychodynamic etc. They are happy to discuss their approach and counselling in general more fully with you so that you can decide whether you wish to go ahead or not.

Les Wallace

Senior Counsellor
Les is an experienced Counsellor and graduate of Strathclyde University Counselling Unit. He has a special interest in genuine self esteem, the valuing of self without the add-ons of money, looks and perceived success. He also believes there is an important place in the counselling room for laughter as well as snot and tears and is working towards the recognition of the importance of humour to people's wellbeing. Les works full time.

Denise Fiske

Counsellor
Denise is a Person Centred Counsellor and graduate of Strathclyde University. She has a keen interest in complimentary health and runs a Tai Chi relaxation group during semester time; she offers counselling two days each week.

Counsellor
Moira is a graduate of the The Open College Counselling Training Trust in Edinburgh.  She offers counselling to students two days each week.  Her special interest is in helping a person to discover their own inner resources and to feel that they have some control over their life.

Anne McPherson

Counsellor
Anne has been with the University for 3 years. She has a Postgraduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling and graduated from Queen Margaret's University. She is a registered mental health nurse who for many years worked in statutory and voluntary organisations. Anne works part time.

Rebecca Black

Counsellor
Rebecca has a background in career guidance and completed the Strathclyde University postgraduate Diploma in Person-centred Counselling in 2006; she joined the team in March 2007. Rebecca works for the Student Counselling and Wellbeing Service on Tuesdays, and also works part-time at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh as a Fertility Counsellor. Her work draws on voluntary experience gained from telephone crisis helpline work [both overseas and in Central Scotland] as well as a wide range of face-to-face counselling experience. She works with men and women with different issues including occupational or academic stress, lack of confidence, complex career decisions, low self esteem, experiences of bullying, emotional abuse, health related issues, loss and bereavement.

Ian Bonnar Evans

Based in Inverness, Ian practices as an integrated counsellor and uses a number of different strategies in his work with clients including cognitive behavioural (CBT) interventions. His background is in secondary and higher education and he is currently working as a trainer and counsellor. Ian has a lot of experience of working alongside clients with sexual health and relationship issues, as well as with individuals experiencing difficulties with anxiety, stress and depression.

Mairi Holmes - UKCP, MBACP (accred), UKRC

Mairi who is based in Inverness graduated with a Diploma in Person Centred Counselling from Strathclyde University in 2000 and with an MSc in Integrative Psychotherapy (Children and Young People) from the University of Wales in 2010. She has a background in Health and Social Services where she has worked in a range of statutory and voluntary agencies across Highland.

Mairi's Counselling experience over recent years has been mainly in Secondary Education across Inverness and with the NHS Specialist Community Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service where she has worked with young people and parents.

As an Integrative therapist Mairi draws on a range of models of Counselling, and a range of interventions in her work and is committed to helping individuals work with whatever they feel is getting in way of their development.

Mairi works with clients who have difficulties with low mood, anxiety, difficult family relationships, stress, self harming behaviours, bullying, abuse, bereavement and traumatic loss. She works two days a week as a Counsellor and canbe contacted by e-mail at

Linden Stefaniak

Based in Inverness, Linden believes that the counselling relationship can itself be healing.She has an integrative approach, using person centred, existential and psychodynamic perspectives.Linden currently works as a counsellor in a sexual health agency for young people, and also carries out assessments and counselling for Employee Assistance Programmes.Linden is also in private practice , seeing clients for longer and short-term counselling for issues such as stress, relationships, trauma, depression, survivors of abuse,and bereavement and loss.

Previously Linden has worked as a counsellor in a G.P. practice and a college and as a volunteer with telephone helplines and mental health and sexual health agencies.

Fiona Leslie MBACP Ad.Dip.Couns.

Based in Inverness and Dingwall, Fiona practices as an integrated counsellor and draws from a wide range of theories and ideas, including psychodynamic, gestalt, humanistic and cognitive-behavioural. She offers the opportunity to work creatively with art materials, objects and simple relaxation techniques. She has worked as a counsellor in a variety of settings, including a post-natal depression project, community health and a primary school. Fiona currently works in private practice with individuals, couples, children and organisations. She has worked with clients experiencing anxiety, stress, depression, eating distress, loss and bereavement, abuse, life transitions and relationship problems.

Margaret Young

Couple Couns. PG Dip. Couns. MBACP (Snr. Accred). UKRCP Reg. Ind. Counsellor

Based in Inverness, Margaret is qualified both as a person-centred and relationship counsellor.  She has extensive experience gained during more than twenty years of counselling in a variety of settings, including GP surgeries, Employee Assistance Programmes and the voluntary sector. Most recently, she worked for ten years as a counsellor specialist in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services before returning to private practice.  Margaret now works with individuals, couples and young people with a wide range of concerns, including relationship difficulties, depression and anxiety, bereavement and loss, abuse, stress and work and health related difficulties.  She is also a counselling supervisor.

Lynden Easterbrook

Based in Elgin and Forres, Lynden trained as a Person Centred Counsellor with a specialist focus on bereavement and loss. She has worked in a variety of settings including women’s refuges, schools, Employee assistance Programmes and in private practice. She is also a counselling supervisor. Lynden works with clients with a variety of concerns including family and relationship difficulties, bereavement and loss, anxiety and depression, workplace difficulties and stress. She also works with clients wishing to explore their creativity.

Western Isles Counsellors

Marilyn Wemyss

Based in Stornoway, Marilyn has been trained as a person-centred and psychodynamic counsellor but draws on all models of counselling in her work. with clients. She has worked for 11 years in general practice having previously worked in the voluntary sector. Marilyn works with clients who are experiencing distress in their lives: difficulties with loss; depression; anxiety; stress and phobias; relationship problems and abuse. She is a supervisor of counsellors in the voluntary sector.
